Before the Baptism of a Child
There are lots of things to organise for a baptism but before you make any arrangements you need to speak to the parish priest. You may have questions to ask, and the priest may have questions to ask you, too! Please come along to a Sunday Mass at 9.45 am and have a chat to the priest afterwards. It may be useful to check with him before you plan to come just to make that he is available on that particular Sunday. He will want to talk with you about the meaning of Baptism and explain to you what happens during the service, so that you will be able to feel at home, and confident to participate.
It is most appropriate to celebrate Baptism during the Sunday Mass. However, we realise that sometimes this is difficult, especially if you have a large number of guests to be accommodated. The priest will be able to tell you what is possible with regards to Baptisms outside of Mass, but usually it takes take place on Sunday Morning at 11.30 am.
Baptisms do not take place during Lent (the six weeks preparation before Easter) You will also need to attend a rehearsal, along with the godparents. The rehearsal will help you to take an active part in the Baptism Service.
